Key Product for Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition Becomes ESSENTIOM

PRINCETON, N.J. (September 29, 2015)—Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition is pleased to introduce ESSENTIOM, the renamed product that has been known as MEGALAC®-R since its original launch in 2001.

The shift to a new name arose after numerous, repeated research results provoked a great deal of thought and discussion about the benefits the product provided when fed in both pre- and postfresh diets. Ultimately, ARM & HAMMER™ concluded the name MEGALAC-R didn’t tell the whole story of the benefits of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).

The name is all that’s changed. The formulation remains the same—ESSENTIOM is still the only consistently formulated EFA source that delivers both Omega-3 and Omega-6 EFAs to put herds on the road to improved immune health and reproductive success.

“With more than a decade of research results, our expanded knowledge helps us better understand that the Omega-3 and Omega-6 EFAs combined with rumen inert fat do so much more than just improve reproduction,” says Roger Beers, global business manager, Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition. “We have seen in trials that dairies see great performance results from its inclusion in the ration, but until we dug deeper, we didn’t know the scope of its reach or why it had such an impact on cows.”

What ARM & HAMMER did know was that the EFAs combined with rumen inert fat helped prepare cows for a smoother transition journey, resulting in healthier calvings and faster recoveries. Plus, EFAs promoted more vigorous immune systems, improved uterine health and greater reproductive success. In turn, healthier cows made more milk.

A glimpse into on-farm trial data provides additional insight into the inner workings within the cow and enabled ARM & HAMMER to better quantify what this feed additive brings to the table.

A series of recent on-farm trials featuring MEGALAC-R—now known as ESSENTIOM—in transition diets all across the country yielded remarkable results. These outcomes are from herds across the country of different sizes, different facilities and different management philosophies:
  • Blood BHBA levels dropped by 44%. On a herd level, BHBA is a useful indicator of the ability of cows to deal with metabolic challenges in the transition period. At the individual cow level, increased serum concentrations of BHBA around calving have been associated with lower milk production and impaired early reproduction.
  • Each dairy showed lowered early embryonic deaths, often cutting this incidence in half or more.
  • Each dairy also showed significant gains in pregnancy rates. Results ranged from 7% increases to 9% increases.
  • Herd conception rates also rose from 7% to as much as 15%; this is directly correlated to increased pregnancy rates.
Armed with this information, ARM & HAMMER concluded that these Essential Omegas are the real story behind this product. And the name ESSENTIOM was born.

“This means dairies can expect the same great results,” says Beers. “The only difference is a new name and updated packaging. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your ARM & HAMMER representative if you have any questions about ESSENTIOM.”
